Why Heritage Breeds?
Heritage breeds are farm animals that were raised in the past and bred to be hardy, low in-put and easy care. Livestock the way it used to be, before modern farming practices that needed animals that could produce more in less time. These are breeds that adapted regionally for generations to produce meat, milk or eggs at the lowest cost by foraging.
Due to the way a lot of our meat, dairy and eggs are produced today, many of the older breeds are in danger of disappearing or already have. They have fallen out of favor for breeds that can be raised anywhere, feedlot style, which usually means raising them in confinement and feeding them grain.
Heritage breeds importance lies not just in biodiversity, they offer incredible variety that may be needed for future farms - robust health, mothering instincts, foraging, and the ability to thrive in a changing climate. These farm animals are important for ensuring food security for our planet – now and for the future.
Our first heritage breed was the St. Croix sheep. In 2016 we added La Fleche chickens and Red Poll cattle to our heritage breed collection.
