Our St. Croix Sheep

We love the St. Croix sheep for many reasons: They are very easy care, requiring no shearing (they naturally shed) and we do not tail dock or vaccinate. The breed is parasite and hoof rot resistant. St Croix are not fussy eaters and don't require grain. Their temperament is docile and most of them are gentle and friendly. Ewes are excellent mothers who regularly raise two or more lambs at a time, and they can breed at a young age (usually around 7 months old) and more than once a year. Rams can also reproduce at a very young age, as early as 3-4 months in our experience.

Our Registered Breeding Stock

Because we are committed to producing breeding stock that improves the breed, we only register sheep that meet or exceed the breed standards.  Any lambs that we won't register are raised as grass fed pasture lambs and sold directly to the consumer or at market.

Our Commitment to Quality

Our goal is to sell only healthy, productive stock. Our sheep are genetically tested for Scrapie resistance and we have never had a case of Johne's Disease, Ovine Progressive Pneumonia/Maedi-Visna, Causative Lymphadenitis (CL) or hoof rot. If you'd like to know more about these and other health issues of sheep, a good basic source that we use can be found at: http://www.sheep101.info/201/diseasesa-z.html

Why is Parasite Resistance Important?

Parasites (or "worms") can cause problems for sheep by robbing them of blood and nutrients. If there's an overload of parasites, it can be fatal. The great thing about the St. Croix is that they are naturally resistant to parasites. We rarely, if ever, have to use any "de-wormer" drugs.

Special note for lambs: Because of their small size lambs can be impacted by a parasite overload much quicker than an adult. Extra attention should be paid to keeping their feeders and waters uncontaminated and being consistent with pasture rotation to keep their feeding area "clean".
